Chapter 13

“BOYS, the preacher’s coming. Get yourselves decent and get to the breakfast table before I come in there with a hairbrush to motivate you.”

Stunt groaned. For a half second, he almost thought his mom had come back from the dead to threaten him. She was the last woman to come after him with a hairbrush. “Yes, ma’am. We’re getting right up,” Stunt answered when he realized it was Teresa. Blinking, he frowned as he noticed that Alex was already awake, sitting on the edge of the bed. “You’re up early.”

He shrugged. “I have trouble sleeping in strange places. Are you doing okay?”

Stunt ran a hand over his face. “Thought for a minute my ma had come back to chase me out of bed, but yeah.” Swinging his legs over the edge of the mattress, Stunt paused as he got a bit of a head rush. Alex’s hand rested on his arm for a moment to steady him, and Stunt smiled at the overprotective gesture. “I haven’t been eating the best. I’m okay. Teresa’s like to have cooked an entire pig’s worth of bacon with company in the house, so I’ll be fine.”

“I feel a little like I just fell into some fifties sitcom with Mom cooking in the kitchen… only I don’t remember any sitcoms that involved shotguns.”

“Green Acres did. But I think Teresa’s a better cook than Eva Gabor was on the show.” Stunt grabbed his pants off the floor and made a few ineffective attempts to brush the wrinkles out. “Wasn’t your mom one for cooking?”

Alex shrugged. “Before she got sick, she could do things with cheese. Grilled cheese sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, cheese crackers—that was her version of cooking, but she always made up for that by being the cool mom, the one who would dance with you in the middle of the store when you were four and everyone else glared because you weren’t being some good little boy.”

“She sounds nice.”

Alex laughed. “She was loud, wild, and fun.” The smile vanished, and it was easy enough to figure out what he was thinking on.

“My mom was the sort who would make sure your butt and the flat side of a ruler had an up close and personal meeting if you made a fuss in public, so I’m imagining how she would have frowned at a woman dancing with her little boy. That just wasn’t done.” As Stunt stood to put on his pants, he wondered what his mother would be saying about him marrying a man. “But you know, when I decided to tell the whole world I was a homosexual, she was right there telling the world if they wanted others to respect their choices that meant respecting mine, even if I was making an ungodly bad decision at that particular point in time. It was a complicated sort of support she showed.”

“She sounds like an interesting woman.”

Stunt nodded. “I wish she could be here. A heart attack took her about two years back.”

“And your father?” Alex asked.
